The sign on the YWCA building on 3rd Avenue just west of Russell St., Missoula, reads, "Empowering Women, Eliminating Racism". What this means, exactly, I am at a loss to explain. If I was "them" (I'm not, thank God), I think I would be more concerned about eliminating sexism as it seems to be that the feminist mystique has just about run its course...and those females who are strong enough to face the truth are beginning to recognize it, and the face of the future, without strong men, terrifies them.

As to the commercial announcer on MTPR, I tend to think that she (she?) is more like those seductive voices which desperate men used to pay good money to listen to on 1-900 phone calls, stirring up their inner fantasies and encouraging them to indulge those fantasies in an orgasmic finale, which left them off no better than they were five minutes earlier but a few dollars shorter. Imagine an old, overweight, cigarette-smoking, woman in hair curlers and pajamas enticing young, testosterone-filled, socially unattractive men to engage their inner self and exercise it to the logical conclusion.

But, then, I haven't listened to NPR or MTPR for years now and don't intend to pick up the habit again anytime soon, so who am I to question? At any rate, apparently the system works and MTPR is still siphoning off enough donations from gullible listeners to stay afloat.

Disclaimer: I think that "public" radio has some very good content and my wife and I regularly watch PBS on Sunday evening, but the fact remains: without "public" support (taxpayer infusion of funds), those venues would probably cease to exist due to a lack of funds sufficient to pay the bills.
