it's getting really central question for me too. Why do so many people still want to close their eyes. Your answer Godlessness sounds to be thinkable for the western world. Japan has however different situation from the beginning. Our religion - Buddhism and Shintoism - seems not to give us awakening, I've heard nothing from these areas. For Japanese community has been always the most important for identity of its members. Harmony and sympathy, consideration for each other is required. This is the main reason that Japan has so high rate of masking and vaccination. Japanese people can't change themselves in this point. Simply impossible. Otherwise they would lose their identity as Japanese. They are good, kind people. But harmony is more important than truth or knowledge for them. This is the problem. So, In a community with a hundred members, if only one knows what is true and wrong, he could never persuade others. Don't make a wave and storm. They don't need warning from the tower of observation. If 10 among 100 give warning, still no use. We need 20 -30 maybe. We could reach this number in 2 or 5 years. It's maybe after collapsing of Japan.
Although I completely agree with the assertion that the pop culture believers share behavior with the multitudes of cult members I see no connection to a lack of faith in a god. And though Pascal made significant contributions to mathmatics and thought, I find no inspiration in the words of faith from a man who argued that believing in god was a good bet.
As for those who worship at the alter of Foulci, their type has always existed. The fear is that they have managed over the last few decades to weasel their way into positions of power where they can impose their religion upon the masses, especially children.
When I was elementary school in the 70s the great fear, presented by Leonard Nimoy, was an impending ice age. 20 years later it became global warming, which morphed into climate change so all natural disaster could be blamed upon the same impending doom. And the followers and joiners joined. All because they had been trained in school to believe whatever dogma the white coat establishment uttered as gospel. Because of that logic has been cast aside.
I no more believe that human beings are born racist than they are born irrational. Both are learned behaviors. Hence the notion that #WuhanFlu was a naturally occurring persists because the ministers in white coats keep preaching that sermon. In my experience the vast majority of people have never heard of Occams Razor. But almost without fail once they understand the law of parsimony and a few other principles of logic they begin to question what they have been told.
I don't think "Men have forgotten God." I think human beings are not being taught to think, pop culture rewards lack of thought, and those in power are capitalizing on their ignorance.
"I think the fear of estrangement is greater than the fear of death". That is what is going on.
