The foreman texted out a work cancellation notice for Monday, so I grabbed the boys and we did an overnighter at Glacier National Park on Sunday/Monday. You can’t just waltz into GNP during the summer and expect everything to be open to you; it’s an immensely popular place and the hotels and campgrounds are booked solid. (not that we’d be staying in a hotel on the premise$)
Also booked solid is the main road through the park. You can’t even drive on the Going to the Sun Road unless you have a reservation. But they don’t open the entrance station until 6am so if you make it early you’re in! We left the Bitterroot at 2:30am and just made it. At this hour we literally were going to the sun.
On our first of four hikes, we trudged over the snowfields at Logan Pass and hiked to the Hidden Lake overview.
Just for fun I decided to wear my custom T-shirt I had printed up and sent by Amazon. It’s simply block white letters on a blue background and says,
2024
D. NONE OF THE ABOVE
I was hoping to get a few comments, and was not disappointed. The first was an old guy who read it aloud back to me.
He said, “2024. None of the above? What does that mean?”
-It means they are giving us three choices and I dislike each of them.
-Well, me too.
I chalked up my first t-shirt encounter as a win. Agreement!
Not so fast, Shumway- he then said, “But a dictatorship is no fun!”
OK, got it; he’s voting for Biden.
He’s part of the crowd that will vote for anybody including Damien from the Omen as long as that other guy, super-evil way beyond Beelzebub, with the R (or D) in front of his name doesn’t get in. It’s such a tired old trick, and so successful for the oligarchy. Sad.
No, after four years of him I’m not much of a fan of Clinton, but at least he’s not that old relic Bob Dole!
No, I’m not much of a fan of Bush, but at least he’s not that Clinton side-kick Gore!
Yes, I’m a bit skeptical of Obama’s experience and promises, but at least he’s not that war-monger phony McCain!
I’m voting Trump, ‘cuz Hillary.
I’m voting Biden, ‘cuz Trump.
I’m voting D ‘cuz R.
I’m voting R ‘cuz D.
etc. etc. etc.
I’m happy to report, however, that all the rests of the comments on my t-shirt were very positive! At least a portion of the nation can see we’re getting shafted whomever we vote for.
“Love your shirt!”
“I couldn’t agree more!”
“Nice shirt!”
-Thank you.
-You’re welcome.
-So you agree?
-Absolutely, we were just talking about this before we saw you.
etc.
That’s about it. Not much to report on our two days in Glacier besides great hikes, great views, splendid waterfalls and my t-shirt. If you are in the W Montana area while it’s blazing hot, I recommend getting over there. Don’t mind reservations; just get in before 6 and camp outside the park (or at one of the no-reservation camping areas in the park.) Take a hike with a waterfall and cool off all you want.
Here’s a sign at the Many Glacier Hotel:
Dan! Your finger is on the pulse of freedom-seekers. Now get out there and lead the way!
